Las Vegas/Tek.no: Swarovski is another name that many of our readers prefer to associate with shiny stones. But this time it is Swarovski Optik that has something exciting that we clearly had to take a look at, namely binoculars with both proper optics and electronics inside.

The product has been named AX Visio and, according to Swarovski, is the world’s first AI-supported binoculars. What it means? Yes, that it has technology inside that can both help locate an object to look at, and also identify what you actually see.

In addition, AX Visio has an integrated 13 megapixel camera that can take photos and video – which can then be shared wirelessly via an app. You can therefore offer others a “live view” of what you have in the binoculars.

Birds and mammals

According to the manufacturer, the intelligence in these binoculars can help identify more than 9,000 different birds and other wildlife. As of today, this means mammals, but Swarovski will be able to update the binoculars with more animal profiles and other functionality over time.

Yes, it almost looks like this when the electronics in the binoculars manage to identify a bird.

At the CES fair here in Las Vegas, we were able to try the binoculars on some cardboard birds strategically placed around Swarovski’s site, and yes – by pressing a button, we could get the AX Visio to both take a picture and identify the poultry. But without knowledge of North American bird life, it is difficult to say anything about how accurate it actually is.

The binoculars’ electronics can also give us the compass direction and angle up or down – perfect if you are trying to explain to others how they should look in the right place themselves. It should also be possible to “mark” a point so that the binoculars use arrows to show the way back to that object, but we did not test this.

At Swarovski’s stand, we learned that the AX Visio has an onboard GPS that helps with this, but we haven’t found anything about this in the specifications we’ve seen.

We must say that the grip in the binoculars is very good, since the surfaces are rough and the design is good. At the same time, there is no problem reaching the buttons or the focus wheel.

All the fun is powered by a battery pack that supposedly “lasts all day” under normal use, or a couple of hours at the most if you’re going to continuously share what you’re watching.

Otherwise, it can also be used without batteries, but then it is just a normal 10×32 binocular.

It costs money to be interested in nature

The function wheel on AX Visio also has a couple of fields marked “I” and “II” which have not yet been used. This means that the manufacturer has the opportunity to possibly add some more functionality later.

That’s good to know, because with a price of NOK 47,900, this should be a product you won’t have to buy in a new version in a couple of years.

The product is scheduled to be on sale from 1 February.
