SVP Winterthur President Resigns Amid Accusations of Collaboration with Right-Wing Extremist Group

Mariawegelin, president of the SVP Winterthur and candidate for the National Council, is resigning from her position. She is accused of having worked with two members of the right-wing extremist “Junge Tat”. The party wants to discuss the matter at an extraordinary general meeting at the end of October, as she announced on Sunday .

Mariawegelin, in coordination with the party executive committee, decided to suspend her office as party president until the extraordinary meeting, wrote the SVP Winterthur. The party does not tolerate extremist groups or attitudes “in any way,” including right-wing extremism.

Right-wing extremists are campaigning for them

A week ago, the “Sonntagsblick” published that Wegelin had commissioned two activists from the right-wing extremist “Junge Tat” to support her in the election campaign on social media. Both have a criminal record. This week it was also announced that the leader of “Junge Tat” is a member of the Junge SVP in the canton of Thurgau.

When the contract was awarded she had never heard of the “Junge Tat” group, saidwegelin in the NZZ. She liked the two young men and there were similarities. In this context, wegelin mentioned Corona and the federal measures.

The “Young Act” is under observation by the Federal Police (Fedpol). Several proceedings are underway against members of the Junge Tat. The group gained notoriety when it disrupted an event in Zurich in 2022 where drag queens read books to children.

Meanwhile, the Winterthur Homeowners Association (HEV) withdrew its support for the SVP candidate Wegelin in the National Council elections. He called on her to distance herself from “Junge Tat”, which, according to the association, she failed to do within a deadline. The SP, Juso and the Alternative List (AL) of Winterthur have called for Wegelin to resign from the city parliament.
