It remains open for the time being, however, whether a fight election will still take place on August 22. While National Councilor Andreas Glarner (57) announced his retirement last week, National Councilor Alfred Heer (58) remains undercover. He leaves BLICK inquiries unanswered.

Sticking to nomination
As long as Alfred Heer does not withdraw, he will remain the official candidate of SVP Zurich, says Zurich Cantonal President Benjamin Fischer (28) to BLICK. “We are sticking to his nomination.” Heer had to decide for himself whether he would stick to his candidacy or not.
–
Fischer has already spoken to Heer about the new starting position – but nothing has been decided yet. “But I would be happy if he stayed in the race,” emphasizes Fischer.

“Two excellent candidates”
The Zurich cantonal president can imagine both Heer and Chiesa as the new SVP boss: “The SVP is in the luxury situation of being able to choose from two excellent candidates if the army remains a candidate.”
–
However, Fischer is not so sure whether the army will actually step into the ring. He recalled that Heer had not sought nomination. They almost had to push him a little bit. “He also has a lot of work with the Presidium of the Business Audit Delegation and as a Council of Europe,” said Fischer.

No resentment for Chiesa’s recommendation
Fischer sees no problem in the fact that the party management committee only proposes Chiesa. “The party leadership has its reasons for its decision – regardless of whether it recommends only one or both candidates.”
–
In any case, he would not resent the party superiors if Heer would stay outside. “In the end, the decision rests with the delegates.”
