In the end it worked, the water polo men of SV Krefeld 72 won the DSV Cup against SV Weiden 13:12 (2:3; 4:1; 1:5; 6:3). For the favorites from Krefeld, it was a surprisingly close game against a weakened player from the Upper Palatinate. It was a balanced game until the middle of the third quarter, in which the SVK did not show the usual defensive strength. When Weiden took the lead with two goals towards the end of the third period, the game seemed to be over for Krefeld. But with two quick goals, Bastian Schmellenkamp was able to equalize to 9:9. When Weiden pulled away again with two goals, Dusan Dragic switched to press coverage, which should pay off in the end. Two more Schellenkamp goals and a goal from Alex Butz made it 12:12 two minutes before the end. Vuk Jelaca didn’t miss the chance to score the winning goal, converting a penalty throw with nerves of steel shortly before the end.

You have to give the opponents from Weiden respect for a strong game despite a number of failures. In the end it was a question of willpower for the SVK to prevail in the end. After two away defeats in the Bundesliga, the victory is psychologically enormously important for the young team, which will now meet the winners of Hamburger TB against SC Neustadt in the round of 16.
