As one of the three highest cantonal courts, the Social Insurance Court of the Canton of Zurich is responsible for handling complaints and lawsuits in the area of social insurance, namely in the area of disability, accident, unemployment, health, old-age and survivors’ insurance also the occupational pension.
Medical questions are usually submitted by means of a complaint for assessment. If the complaint meets the legal requirements, the court will take action and, with the cooperation of the parties, establish the facts relevant to the decision. It collects the necessary evidence and appreciates it at its own discretion.
In proceedings before the social security court, the principle of investigation applies; the court is not bound by the requests of the parties. The decisions are justified and opened in writing, accompanied by instructions on legal remedies.
The arbitration tribunal is affiliated to the Social Insurance Court. It is the only cantonal authority to judge disputes under federal law between insurance carriers and service providers in the areas of health insurance, accident, disability and military insurance.
