Valentina also holds the record of being the youngest woman in space. Another woman who leaped from Soviet soil to wine like Valentina has written her name in history. This is Svetlana Savitskaya. After Terashkova’s history, it would take another 20 long years for another woman to reach space. It was pilot Svetlana Savitskaya who flew in the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz T-5 in 1982. Svetlana later held the record for being the second woman in space and the first woman to be in space twice. Svetlana’s second space flight was in 1984. In that journey, she also holds the record of being the first woman to walk in space. It has been 39 years since Svetlana’s historic journey on July 25, 1984. Svetlana went into space in the Soyuz T-12 spacecraft that day. The spacecraft was docked with the Soviet Union’s Salyut 7 space station. Svetlana spent 3.5 hours outside the spacecraft as part of the mission. Svetlana was accompanied by her companion Vladimir Zanibekov. An expert parachute jumper, Svetlana holds three world records in stratosphere jumps and 15 world records in jet jumps. Svetlana’s father Yevgeny Savitsky was a famous World War II fighter pilot. He later became the Deputy Commander in Chief of the Soviet Air Defense. Svetlana is 74 years old today.
