Director Jan Svěrák, winner of the Oscar for the film Kolja, baptized his new book Světakrásy on Tuesday. PrahaIN.cz took part in the baptism, which took place in the Luxor Palace of Books. “The book deals with things that are not well talked about, so I wrote about them and I hope that they will be well read,” the author told us with a smile.
During the interview, we asked Jan Svěrák about the film Kolja from 1996. It was successful both here and abroad. It would be hard to find someone who hasn’t seen the film. It became the most visited film in the Czech Republic, won six Czech Lions, but most importantly the Oscar in the category of best foreign language film.
The role of Kolya was played by the Russian actor Andrej Chalimon. After filming, he went back home, shortly after that he returned to the Czech Republic, where he graduated from the first and second grade of elementary school. But since no other film offers came, he returned back to Russia.
He celebrated his 33rd birthday in January.
“We don’t meet. It seems that with each film another member is added to our family, but we basically spend about twenty days together during the filming, and it’s like we’re at camp,” Jan Svěrák told PrahaIN.cz.

There are said to be two exceptions. Ondřej Vetchý and Tereza Voříšková. “But we don’t see those child representatives, even from the General School,” he added.
We also asked about his favorite movies. “Blade Runner, Amarcord, Oblomov, The French Clutch or The Bullitt Case,” revealed the director.
During the early evening of Tuesday, however, Jan Svěrák mainly launched his new book.
“They are shorter, some longer texts that deal with things that are not often talked about because they are internal. They are difficult to name,” explained Jan Svěrák.
“This book is personal. It contains memories, dreams, and observations that I felt the need to record without suspecting that they had anything to do with each other. Some are cheerful, others are rather touching or pensive. Yet they have something in common. They affected me so much that under their influence I changed the course of my further direction. Like when the captain of the ship gets new coordinates and turns the rudder. It could be my travelogue if you accept that you can travel not only on Earth, but also within yourself, in the inner world,” says Jan Svěrák about the book.
“In addition to earthly experiences with one dog, whales and cannibals, you will also read about journeys to the realm of dreams and beyond the limits of my consciousness. This type of travel has recently become of interest to me. A person learns something, gets to know more, and it is also less time-consuming compared to ordinary travel, incomparably cheaper and has no carbon footprint,” Svěrák also said about the book Světakrásy.
