Sven Botman has played two games this season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, the 23-year-old center back of Newcastle United revealed in conversation with Sky Sports. “I injured my knee against Brentford,” Botman reflects.
Newcastle played against Brentford in the fifth round of the Premier League, a match they won 1-0. Botman had problems with his knee, but played the game. “After that I played two more games.”
The defender is referring to the Champions League winner against AC Milan (0-0) and the historic victory over Sheffield United (0-8). Botman played a full part in both matches and scored the last goal against Sheffield.
Botman suffered a bad knee from that last match. “The scan showed that there was a lot of damage in the knee,” said the former Ajax and Lille OSC defender.
It was feared that Botman’s season would already be over. “Some specialists claimed that the cruciate ligament was completely torn, others said not.” An operation would initiate a recovery process of six to nine months, but Botman chose not to do so.
“I chose to rest and avoid surgery. I am now back and I feel great.” Botman made his return against Fulham on December 16 (3-0 win) and then played another three games.
“So it looks like I made the right choice.” Newcastle will play Liverpool on New Year’s Day at 9:00 PM Dutch time. Botman could therefore immediately make minutes in the new year.
