Recently, SV Waidhofen repeatedly issued slogans to “somehow make it to the winter break”. But now there is a big change: Edgar Eichler, who replaced Michael Scherzer as coach after six rounds of the preseason, now has to vacate the coaching bench himself. Andreas Neuwirth (49) will take his place on an interim basis.
“We had to act now to maybe give the players another push so that we can still get one or two points,” says chairman Andreas Hanisch, justifying the step. He knows that Eichler is not primarily responsible for the current situation: “We were simply very unlucky with injuries.”
Eichler understands the club’s move: “We’ve been talking about it for a few weeks now. I wanted to stop myself, but then I continued. I really hope for the club that there is some kind of coaching effect and that one or two points can still be scored.”
Once before, at the end of the 2017 autumn season, Andreas Neuwirth – at the time replacing Witold Sikorski – stepped in at SVW. The long-time Waidhofen player trained the Vienna Austria youth team for a long time, now lives in the Waldviertel again and is a teacher at the Waidhofen middle school. “We are grateful to him for taking over in this situation,” says Hanisch. The club would like to reposition itself in the winter.
There are still four rounds to be completed in the championship – on Friday the Waldviertel derby awaits second-placed Schrems.
