On November 5th, Suzuki announced the unveiling of the first mass-produced BEV (battery electric vehicle) model, the VITARA, in Milan, Italy. Production will begin at Suzuki Motor Gujarat Ltd. in India in the spring of 2025, and sales will begin in countries around the world including Europe, India and Japan from around the summer of 2025.
The VITARA is a mass-produced model based on the “eVX” concept model that was unveiled at the Auto Expo held in India in January 2023 and at the Japan Motor Show held in Japan in October 2023, and this is the Suzuki BEV global strategic vehicle. This is the first installment. Key specifications for Europe include a 2WD model with a battery capacity of 49kWh and a 2WD/4WD model with a battery capacity of 61kWh.
Based on the concept of “Emotional Versatile Cruiser”, the design combines a positive and powerful feeling, a BEV powertrain that provides the crisp and sharp driving characteristic of BEVs, and an electric 4WD that provides powerful driving performance as well as capability travel on rough roads.
The theme of the design is “High-Tech & Adventure”, with a style that combines the advanced feeling of a BEV and the strength of an SUV. It features an integrated display and a solid-looking panel and center console.
The EV powertrain combines a high-efficiency eAxle that integrates a motor and converter with a lithium-ion phosphate battery to achieve crisp acceleration from takeoff and sharp acceleration from low speeds to high Total system output is 106kW / 189Nm for the 49kWh 2WD model, 128kW / 189Nm for the 61kWh 2WD model, and 135kW / 300Nm for the 61kWh 4WD model.
The ALLGRIP-e, which is driven by a 4WD electric motor, makes full use of Suzuki’s strength in four-wheel drive technology and has two independent eAxles at the front and rear. It also has a Trail mode that allows you to smoothly escape from rough roads by applying the brakes to the tires that are spun on one side and distributing driving torque to the tires on the other side (function LSD).
In addition, the newly developed “HEARTECT-e” platform features a light structure, high voltage protection, and a large internal space due to short crosses, and the main floor has eliminated the member under the floor to increase battery capacity.
Regarding the recently announced e-VITARA, Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki said, “The e-VITARA is Suzuki’s first BEV, developed through trial and error to make it easy for purchase used towards the realization of a neutral society, we offer a variety of options tailored to each region, including BEVs, hybrid vehicles, and CNG vehicles to promote mobility suitable for the a righteous person in every country and region.”
