Suzuki Showcases Affordable Mild Hybrid Cars at GIIAS 2023

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – PT Suzuki Indomobil Sales (SIS) exhibited a line of cars equipped with Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) aka mild hybrid technology at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2023.

Suzuki vehicles that carry this mild hybrid technology are the Ertiga Hybrid, Grand Vitara Hybrid, and the recently launched XL7 Hybrid.

For information, SHVS technology is equipped with an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) component and a Lithium-ion Battery which has an acceleration assist function to lighten the load on the engine when accelerating.

In short, regenerative braking by taking advantage of the deceleration moment to re-generate electrical power which will be stored in the battery, as well as engine auto start-stop which will stop the combustion process in the engine when it is not needed during a trip.

In contrast to other automotive manufacturers who directly make electric cars, Suzuki is still sticking with its mild hybrid technology.

PT SIS Strategic Planning Department Head Joshi Prasetya said, Suzuki deliberately created products that were included in the people’s purchasing power segment.

“We have a concept that popularization must be able to enter a large population. With prices that are indeed included in the segment where people’s purchasing power is high,” said PT SIS Strategic Planning Department Head Joshi Prasetya, in Tangerang, Saturday (19/8/2023).

“The economy of scale must be fought for. Now, with the right technology and affordable prices, people can buy more of these vehicles, experience them and that’s what we say with popularization,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Ei Mochizuki, General Manager of Strategic Planning Dept. The Head of PT (SIS) added, when compared to pure electric cars, aka battery electric vehicles (BEV), the reduction in carbon emissions of hybrid cars is indeed less.

“But if there are a lot of sales, it means that the total shortfall can be contributed by the total CO2 shortage. This is Suzuki’s concept, reducing CO2 pollution levels,” said Mochizuki.

In addition, Mochizuki added, the current price of Suzuki cars is quite affordable even though they are already equipped with mild hybrid technology.

“It’s not too expensive compared to ICE (Internal Combustion Engine), it goes into people’s purchasing power. This is Suzuki’s goal, Suzuki’s target, anyone can buy it,” said Mochizuki.
