[이데일리 스타in 이석무 기자] Suwon Samsung showed its fighting spirit to the end, but failed to advance to the quarterfinals of the Asian Football Federation (AFC) Champions League (ACL).
Suwon couldn’t decide the match between Vissel Kobe in the 2020 ACL quarter-finals and overtime at the Aljanub Stadium in Doha, Qatar on the night of the 10th (Korean time), but lost 6-7 in the penalty shootout.
With this, Suwon had to be satisfied with reaching the ACL quarterfinals two years after advancing to the 2018 (quaternary). However, having a team of only domestic players without a foreign player and passing through the group stage and reaching the quarterfinals was definitely an achievement beyond expectations.
Vissel Kobe, who beat Suwon on this day, faces Ulsan Hyundai in the quarterfinals. Ulsan beat Beijing Guoan 2-0 in the quarter-finals and made a first come in the quarter-finals. The quarterfinals between Ulsan and Vissel Kobe will be held at 7 pm on the 13th.
Suwon came out with a 3-5-2 formation with Sang-Bum Ko and Seung-beom Ko as two-tops, and appointing Ho-Ik Jang, Sang-min and Sang-min Yang as three-backs. When defending, flank wingbacks Lee Gi-je and Kim Tae-hwan came down to build 500.
On the other hand, Vissel Kobe confronted it with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Douglas, a Brazilian striker, took the lead. On the other hand, Barcelona-born international midfielder Andres Iniesta held the bench due to a thigh injury.
Suwon scored a surprise opening goal in the 7th minute of the first half. As Park Sang-hyuk flooded the cross raised by Seung-beom Ko from the right side, he changed direction slightly with the heading and connected it with a goal. Park Sang-hyuk is 165cm short, but made a heading goal with fast speed and witty positioning.
Since then, Suwon exerted strong pressure from mid-won and pushed Vissel Kobe back. But in the first half of the 35th minute crisis came. In the process of stopping Vissel Kobe’s counterattack, Tae-Hwan Kim pushed the opponent’s attacker down.
The referee initially decided that the foul was committed within the penalty area. A yellow card was given to Kim Tae-hwan and a penalty kick was declared at the same time. However, VAR readings confirmed that the foul was committed outside the penalty area. The penalty kick was changed to a free kick. Instead, Kim Tae-hwan’s card changed from yellow to red. To make matters worse, in a free kick situation, Vissel Kobe’s Kyogo Furuhashi allowed the goal to score a 1-1 tie.
After that, Suwon focused on defending when there was a shortage of one player. Although he gave up control of the game, he prevented the opponent from attacking without much difficulty with a solid defense. The match entered overtime with a 1-1 tie.
Suwon allowed Vissel Kobe several decisive goals in the late overtime. However, Suwon was lucky with a shot hitting the goal. There was a regrettable moment when Go Seung-beom’s shot hit the goal in the second half of Suwon’s extra-time.
Even in extra time, the two teams, who couldn’t decide to win, risked all fate in a penalty shootout. In the penalty shootout, the goddess of victory was not on the side of Suwon. Both teams competed tightly, scoring goals up to the sixth kicker. But in the seventh kicker, Heebi was mixed. Suwon Jang Ho-ik’s shot went over the crossbar. On the other hand, Vissel Kobe’s shooting by Noriaki Fujimoto cut through the net and the bloody bloody ended.
