SUVs are the most popular in the Baltics; their demand increased by 21%

According to the data collected by the car dealer Moller Auto, the most popular type of car in the Baltics is SUVs.

The demand for SUVs this year between January and July increased by 21% compared to the same period last year. “Moller Auto” experts point out that the type of car engine will be more important in the future, thus the demand for those types of cars that are available as electric cars will grow.

According to “Moller Auto” data, this year, compared to last year, SUVs were sold in the Baltics by 21% more. Also in Latvia, SUV-type cars are more in demand than, for example, sedans and hatchbacks. Compared to Lithuania and Estonia, in Latvia this year more activity than last year is observed in the segment of commercial vehicles, which includes cargo and passenger vehicles, such as cargo and passenger minibuses. This year, between January and July, compared to the same period in 2021, the demand for them in Latvia has grown by 38%.

Izīda Gerkena, executive director of the “Moller Auto” group of companies in the Baltic States, states: “The most popular types of cars, both globally and in Latvia, are SUVs. They are more suitable for driving not only on asphalt, but also on gravel roads, which is a big advantage in Latvia. At the same time, SUVs are chosen for their capacity, comfortable seating position and road visibility. We also observe positive trends in the segment of commercial vehicles – the demand for car types in this segment is increasing for two reasons. First, companies regularly renew their aging fleets. Secondly, along with the development of e-commerce and the change in consumer habits, more choosing to receive goods with delivery, the number of delivery service providers that use, for example, cargo minibuses in their work is increasing.”

“Moller Auto” data also reveal that in the past, SUVs, but also hatchbacks and sedans, were among the most popular cars in the Baltics, especially between 2015 and 2018/2019. but currently the demand for them is less. Such trends are observed when new car types and models enter the market, for example, it is currently affected by the offer of smaller SUV cars. Likewise, today’s consumer needs are changing, and when buying a car, the main criterion is often the provision of family needs, giving preference to more capacious vehicles.

Outlining the future forecasts, I. Gerkena states: “Looking into the near future, the trends in the choice of car types will most likely not change. SUVs will still remain relevant, but as a growing trend, I would like to emphasize the growing interest in car types that are also available as electric cars. Namely, the first most popular car types in the electric car segment were hatchbacks, for example, such models as “Volkswagen e-Golf”, “Volkswagen e-up”, “Volkswagen ID.3”. However, due to customer demand, e-SUV-type eletrocars are currently gaining popularity, for example, car models “Audi Q4 e-tron”, “Volkswagen ID.4”, “Volkswagen ID.5″. Currently, experience shows that almost every second car buyer shows interest in an electric car, and I think that this will only increase. This trend can also be observed elsewhere in Europe. Therefore, I can confirm that our car owners go hand in hand with European trends.”
