SUV Segment Occupies Over 70% of Russian New Passenger Car Market, Continues to Grow

Autostat: the SUV segment occupied more than 70% of the market for new passenger cars

In January, 70.6% of all new passenger cars sold in Russia were in the SUV segment, that is, crossovers and SUVs. The segment continues to grow year by year: in 2007 it accounted for only 16.7% (every sixth new car), in 2010 – already 24.3% (every fourth), in 2012 – 30%, in 2017 – m – 40%, and in 2021, SUVs accounted for more than half (50.7%) of the market.

Moreover, this January with its 70.6% is a record even in relation to the past 2023, when crossovers and SUVs occupied 66.5% of the new passenger car market.

Let us remind you that the most popular crossover at the end of the year was Haval Jolion with a result of 55,550 cars sold and an annual growth of 3.2 times. In second place is Lada Niva Travel with 46,896 cars (an increase of 2.4 times), in third place is Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max, 41,057 cars. The top 5 was completed by Niva Legend and Geely Coolray.

In the secondary market, crossovers and SUVs are also becoming more and more popular: in 2023 – plus 24% compared to sales a year earlier! The leader here is Niva Legend (VAZ-2121), and the top five includes Chevrolet Niva, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Land Cruiser and Kia Sportage.
