The Canadian band Suuns had to postpone their European tour several times due to Corona. But on Tuesday the time had finally come and the musicians played in the new Club44 on Hermannstrasse. An evening like in the sound jungle, says Hendrik Schröder

There are five of Suuns on this tour, actually the band only consists of three musicians. But you need a few more people to reproduce this dense sound from Suuns live. The band members come on stage in shirts and hoodies and fiddle around with their armada of effects devices. It trickles and rustles and flashes from the speakers before the concert really starts. Two synth keyboard things are set up, drums, bass, half a dozen guitars are there. The band has their backs to the audience, the stage remains almost dark. The cacophony of sounds gets louder and louder – and then it really starts.

In Trance

Then the triggered drum kit kicks in. Triggered means that the individual drums are to a certain extent wired and can be assigned different sounds. That gives the drums an uncanny impact, but also makes them very precise and changeable.

The Suuns drummer is a smiling guy with a full beard who occasionally puts his drumsticks to one side and just plays with his hands, which looks pretty cool and sounds pretty good thanks to the electronics. Meanwhile, the bass player stands in the corner and swings his long hair back and forth in front of his face and doesn’t stop there, it’s like in a trance.

Serious musicians at work

In general, the five of them are completely absorbed in their music in between, kneel down and fiddle with effects, hardly look at each other and when they come back up and look at the audience, they look almost surprised and seem to think: “Yikes, there are still people “, they forget about their sound. Because such a Suuns concert is not a rock star show, no entertainment, nothing to clap along. These are five very serious musicians at work.

No break for the ears

The sound that comes out of this work is like wallpaper from the 1960s. Very psychedelic, herbaceous. Due to the amount of electronics, it all has enormous impact, but despite the many effects, the Suuns manage to make their songs sound organic and direct.

The songs merge almost directly into one another, there is hardly any break for the ears. Noises are always coming from somewhere. Sampled voice recordings, an electric flute, an alienated saxophone. The singing is so laden with effects that one often does not understand the lyrics. That is already the case on the records and is well intended, the vocals more as an additional instrument than as the focus.

Exhausting and challenging

All of this is exhausting and challenging. For the band and especially for the audience. A few hundred fans have come to the new Club Hole44 and have stood in line for a long, very long time. 2G concert, which lasts until all evidence has been checked. And one half, it looks like, lets itself in, stands tightly packed, spellbound in front of the stage, moving, where possible, to the beat.

The other half stands further back, is overwhelmed or bored and chatting. But chatting and by the way, you can’t understand the Suuns. Fortunately, it keeps getting so loud that you can actually no longer talk. And when the sound rolls so nicely, the musicians sometimes nod imperceptibly and with a very quiet smile: Yes, that’s the way it should be! So loud, so confused, so blatant, so full of sound the whole place.
