They were persecuted when Suu Kyi was in power. That is what makes the international community criticize Suu Kyi for turning a blind eye to the suffering of the Rohingya community.
Sasa, Suu Kyi’s main ally who uses only one name and describes himself as the representative representing Myanmar’s parliament to the United Nations, said it was time for the country’s 55 million people to put their differences aside and face the military that seized power since February 1.
Under the previous government led by Suu Kyi, who is now detained, Myanmar has defended the military against accusations of genocide against the Rohingya starting in 2017, forcing more than 700,000 people to flee across the border into Bangladesh.
The military’s treatment of the Rohingya prompted the United States (US) to sanction military leaders, damaged Suu Kyi’s international reputation and worsened the investment climate.
The authorities continue to fail to ensure protection for their return, leaving them living in squalid conditions in refugee camps. They are denied their basic rights including citizenship, while the authorities — including those previously elected — even refuse to recognize them as Rohingya and call them “Bengalis,” a term they see as an insult to the community.
