Sustainable Hyacinth Cultivation in the Netherlands: Results of Vital Cultivation Project POP3

Bulb Region – Using clean, virus- and disease-free tissue culture material and the clean cultivation of hyacinth bulbs is the most sustainable way of growing hyacinth. This is evident from the results of the POP3 project “Vital cultivation of hyacinth”. The project focuses on possibilities for sustainable hyacinth cultivation and is part of the rural development program (POP3) for developing, making the agricultural sector in the Netherlands more sustainable and innovating.

This project offers the sector a solution to the problem of cyclical cultivation by focusing on one-way cultivation. With cyclical cultivation, diseases and pests are dragged from the field to the shed and back again, causing the bulbs to become increasingly sick. Although crop rotation can reduce disease pressure, this is a challenge due to the limited space in the Bulb Region. This forces growers to combat diseases and pests with chemicals.

The project shows that a clean start with virus- and disease-free tissue culture material is promising. Important results include a growing investment by growers in clean equipment, the formation of a group of growers who work together to implement a cleaner system and the hyacinth product group of the Royal General Association for Flower Bulb Culture wants to start a follow-up study.
