How do you combine performance with sustainability in an engine oil for everyone? The lubricant manufacturer ROWE from Worms has addressed this question and developed an innovative product range: ROWE SUNSPEED.
Sustainability for all: ROWE SUNSPEED – The new 100% biosynthetic engine oil

For over 25 years, ROWE has been searching for the best products and uncompromising performance. This is not an easy task when you are researching alternatives to engine oils that do not contain any mineral oil at all. ROWE has now answered the question of whether maximum sustainability and performance can be combined in an engine oil for the masses with a clear “yes”.
The new ROWE SUNSPEED® is free of mineral oils of fossil origin. It uses base oils with high-performance synthetic hydrocarbon compounds that are 100 percent synthesized from plant biomass. The synthesized base oil uses vegetable fat obtained from biomass, which is extracted and refined into vegetable oils. The renewable raw material does not contain any of the impurities found in conventional base oils. The carbon dioxide previously bound in the plants leads to a negative CO2 balance of the base oils. The technology behind it has made significant progress in recent years, so that ROWE is now able to produce a wide range of viscosities for everyday use.
From the racetrack to the shelf
“The performance has to be right, otherwise a product like this would not be accepted at all,” explains Otto Botz, responsible for the development of ROWE SUNSPEED®. “Our motorsport team ROWE RACING has been using one of our formulations with base oils made from 100 percent plant-based biomass for years. The knowledge of the feasibility and performance has been in-house for a long time. But they don’t help regular drivers yet and we have now changed that.”
Technological progress based on 100% biosynthetics
Disrupted supply chains, limited resources and the increasingly visible effects of our consumer behavior have led to sustainability becoming a high priority in our everyday thinking and actions. Many people are consciously looking for sustainable alternatives and are willing to pay higher prices for them.
“Our society is in a time of rethinking and rethinking – and ROWE is right in the middle of it,” says Dr. Alexandra Kohlmann, Managing Director of ROWE Mineralölwerk GmbH in Worms. “We are proud to be able to offer a sustainable motor oil alternative for everyone from now on, which closes a gap in the product range of an entire industry in a user- and consumer-oriented way,” continues the economics graduate.

User-friendly alternative for everyone
SUNSPEED® reflects the existing ROWE range. In the future, a SUNSPEED® variant for each product will be produced at the main plant in Worms. Six passenger car oils and one racing oil with the best-selling viscosities will be the first to be produced in one of the most modern lubricant plants in Europe. “Every single biosynthetic product meets the same requirements as its mineral oil-based counterpart and combines sustainability with impressive performance values,” explains co-managing director Stefan Wermter. “In particular, application safety and the ability to top up and refill are particularly important to us in order to make the switch possible for all those who prefer a sustainable alternative – regardless of which car they drive.”
One thing is already certain: the new sustainable product range will promote a more conscious approach to high-quality lubricants.
