Sustainable Energy Consumption in the Netherlands Increases to 15 Percent in 2022

NOS News

Of all energy used in the Netherlands last year, 15 percent was generated sustainably. This is according to provisional figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics. A year earlier it was still 13 percent.

Solar and wind energy in particular were consumed more. In 2022, many solar panels have been installed and the sun was often shining. The total capacity of solar panels increased by 28 percent to more than 19,000 megawatts (MW).

Wind energy consumption increased by 13 percent to 78 petajoules (PJ). This was mainly due to the increased use of onshore wind energy (a quarter more than in 2021).

Less biomass

Heat pumps are also on the rise. This is still relatively small at 7 percent of the total amount of renewable energy, but the share is rising rapidly. The total amount of heat extracted last year increased by more than a quarter compared to 2021, to more than 20 PJ.

Most sustainable energy (40 percent) still comes from biomass, but its use is declining. A quarter less biomass is co-fired in power plants. The criteria have also been tightened, as a result of which not all biomass is regarded as sustainable anymore.

The Netherlands has agreed with the European Union that in 2030 at least 27 percent of the energy used will come from renewable sources. In 2019 this was still 9 percent.
