On Thursday shortly before 12 noon, the police and fire brigade closed the area in front of the Russian embassy in Bern’s Elfenau district. The reason for the operation was apparently suspicious objects.
These were examined by the canton police and judged to be harmless, as a spokeswoman for the Keystone-SDA news agency said. Rast emphasized that there was never any danger to the environment. Police were unable to say whether any political messages were affixed to the items. This is the subject of ongoing investigations.
Additional security measures
Because employees had been threatened, the Russian embassy asked the responsible Swiss authorities last week to “ensure appropriate security measures”.
The Bern canton police then set up an additional protective cabin at the embassy. For “tactical reasons”, the police did not say whether these or other security precautions were taken because of the current war situation.
