From Monday Osakidetza going to suspend further surgical operationss that were planned and will not be carried out to assign the nursing staff to reinforce the ICUs that have been going through the most difficult time in the Basque Country since the summer. Some non-urgent operations had already been suspended in the last week at the HUA, Basurto and the Donostia Hospital.
At least in the OSI Car several services have received a communication to de-schedule more operations as of Monday. Obviously, all those that are indemovable and the oncological ones remain. It is among those that can be delayed where suspensions are being increased for next week.
The HUA ICUs are experiencing a difficult situation. Beds have already had to be expanded at the Santiago hospital in recent days. Right now there are 24 people with COVID-19 in intensive care (Osakidetza does not count the patients who have negative in the test but are still in the ICU).
The intensive care units of Vitoria are also receiving sick from Gipuzkoa, the Basque territory most affected by the pandemic.
Sources from the Health Department have indicated that “what Osakidetza is doing is following the Contingency Plan that already provides for the non-scheduling of non-urgent surgeries due to an increase in hospital tension.”
These sources indicate that on Monday “the situation will be reassessed.”
