Suspension of flights from Canada to Oaxaca will have less impact: ASUR

OAXACA, Oax. January 29, 2021.- The suspension of flights from Canada to destinations in the solar belt, such as Mexico, including the beach in Oaxaca, will have a lesser impact given that at this time there are no flights from that country to Oaxaca, said the administrator from the Benito Juárez International Airport (ASUR), Juan Pablo García Luna.

He explained that since the pandemic began in Mexico, the impact on air traffic for Oaxaca decreased considerably by 80% in 2020 and this year it remains at 45% and in gradual recovery.

He explained that the measures that Canada has taken in the face of the spread of the new strain of Coronavirus will have an impact but it will be less.

The main Canadian airlines that agreed to suspend service are AirCanada, WestJet, Sunwing and Air Transat, to destinations in the Caribbean and Mexico until next Friday, April 30.

The president of the Mexican Association of Hotels and Motels Oaxaca delegation, José Rivera said that Huatulco will be one of the destinations that will most suffer the low influx of Canadian visitors.

He explained that every year, especially in the months of April to May, Canadians travel to the country and Oaxaca to relax from the cold weather, coupled with the fact that a significant number reside in Huatulco.

According to data from visitors of foreign nationality available to the Ministry of the Interior, in 2020, 934 thousand 713 Canadians visited Mexico.

While by air, the arrival of foreigners in the case of Oaxaca, through the Huatulco airport was 33 thousand 743 and in the one of Oaxaca 13 thousand 596 visitors.
