The son of the man suspected of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump in Florida has been arrested on federal charges of possessing child sexual abuse images.
Oran Routh was arrested this week after authorities searched his home in Greensboro, North Carolina, “in connection with an unrelated investigation into child exploitation,” an FBI official said in court documents.
Investigators seized multiple electronic devices and found hundreds of files depicting child sexual abuse, according to court documents. He faces two counts of possession and receipt of child sexual abuse material.
Oran Routh’s father is Ryan Wesley Routh, who is charged with the attempted assassination of Trump on a golf course in Florida earlier this month. Ryan Routh has been charged with federal weapons offenses, but prosecutors have indicated that much more serious attempted murder charges are on the horizon.
Oran Routh’s arrest was first reported Tuesday by ABC News.
No attorney was listed for Oran Routh in court documents. Telephone messages left for Oran Routh’s family were not immediately returned.
On Monday, a federal judge agreed with Justice Department prosecutors that Ryan Routh should remain locked up while he awaits trial in his case.
Prosecutors have said Ryan Routh left a note detailing his plans to kill the former president and kept a handwritten list of dates and places where Trump would appear in his car. The note outlining Routh’s plans was placed in a box he left months earlier at the home of an unidentified person who didn’t open it until after Ryan Routh’s arrest, prosecutors said.
