Suspects jump into the Spree after robbery

Nr. 1635
Last night, emergency services were alerted to a robbery in Friedrichshain. According to initial findings, two suspects entered a bar on Rudolfstrasse at around 2 a.m. Behind the counter, the suspects threatened the staff and demanded that they hand over the cash register. When the men failed to open the cash register on the spot, they ripped it from its anchorage and fled the bar on foot. According to witnesses, the suspected robbers first ran across the Max Koch Passage to Warschauer Strasse. On their way, they left the previously stolen cash register behind after an unsuccessful attempt to throw it over a wall. At the East Side Gallery, a witness blocked the escapees’ path with his car, causing one of the men to crash into the vehicle. The two suspects are then said to have jumped into the Spree, where emergency services were able to catch one of the men a short time later. The 29-year-old was arrested and taken to a specialist department of Police Directorate 5 (City). The second suspect could not be arrested. Further investigations are ongoing.
