(CNN) – A 38-year-old man was arrested “peacefully” Thursday after he shot a person to death and barricaded himself in a hotel room for more than six hours in Dearborn, Michigan, according to authorities.
After hours of negotiations, “the entrenched gunman was arrested without incident. Michigan Ave. is still closed and will be closed as long as the investigation continues ”. Michigan State Police tweeted Thursday night.
The suspect has a history of mental illness, Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said during a press conference Thursday night.
“Prior to our arrival, there was a shooting that proved fatal,” Shahin said. The dead man was a 55-year-old employee of the Hampton Inn.

The incident began when the suspect got into a dispute with hotel staff over money, according to Shahin.
“The police and officers are working to clear the entire area around the hotel. Please stay away from the area as this is an active and extremely dangerous situation for the public. ” tweeted the state police.
DuVall Elementary School, located less than a mile from the Hampton Inn, was partially closed.
“There is a situation outside the building and we will not allow anyone to enter the school at this time. All of our staff and students are safe and our learning and day continues. There will be no activities outside DuVall, ”the school posted on its website.
