A suspected Moroccan spy has to answer to the higher regional court in Düsseldorf from this Monday (9.30 a.m.). The 36-year-old is said to have spied on supporters of the opposition Moroccan Hirak movement living in Germany for the Moroccan foreign intelligence service. The federal prosecutor’s office has accused him of acting as a secret service agent.

In March 2020, the accused is said to have been recruited for the secret service. According to the indictment, the Moroccan subsequently transmitted information about his compatriots to his commanding officers. In return, he is said to have received travel expenses worth around 5,000 euros. On November 14 of last year, he was arrested in the Cologne area. Since then he has been in custody. Ten days of negotiations are planned for the process until the end of August.

The Hirak protest movement denounces corruption and abuse of power in Morocco. It was created in 2016 out of outrage over the death of a fish seller. The man is said to have been crushed in the press of a garbage truck while trying to stop officials from destroying his goods.
