Suspected fraud in corona aid in almost 360 cases

The four public prosecutor’s offices in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are investigating suspected fraud in connection with Corona emergency aid in almost 360 cases. This was about 30 more than two months ago, said the Justice Ministry in Schwerin on request. According to the information, ten proceedings were added during this period in the Stralsund public prosecutor’s office, nine in Neubrandenburg, eight in Schwerin and five in Rostock.

If there was a disbursement of emergency aid, the possible damage is between 340 and 27,000 euros. According to the ministry, a so-called corona loan from the state development bank KfW even involves damage of around 280,000 euros. A total damage from all cases cannot be quantified.

According to the information, most of the proceedings are still ongoing. Twenty proceedings have so far been discontinued due to a lack of sufficient suspicion, and four have been concluded with an indictment or an application for a penalty order.

Justice Minister Katy Hoffmeister (CDU) fears in her own words that the public prosecutor’s offices in the country will continue to deal with investigations in this context for a while. “Not every suspicion will be confirmed in the end. However, the first indictments show that suspected cases are also substantiated,” emphasized the minister.

The federal and state governments had decided on numerous aid programs for the economy since the beginning of the corona pandemic last year. According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, for example, around 350 million euros flowed as emergency aid in the northeast, and more than 43,000 applications were submitted.
