Suspected duds: 10,000 people in Göttingen have to leave houses NDR.de – News – Lower Saxony

Status: 07/29/2022 10:24 am

Tomorrow morning around 10,000 residents of the western part of Göttingen will have to leave their homes to search for World War II bombs. Rail traffic will also be restricted.

Five suspicious spots lie on a wasteland between Leine and Schützenplatz. The area within a radius of 1,000 meters will be closed. The residents are said to have left the area early in the morning at 6 a.m. Around 1,800 emergency services from the police, fire brigade, THW, rescue services and other aid organizations are on duty at the weekend for work related to evacuation and security. The Göttingen police are supported by hundreds from all over Lower Saxony.

Residents are not allowed back until Sunday

According to the city of Göttingen, the area will probably remain closed until the afternoon of the following day. If duds are found at the suspected sites, they would have to be defused or blown up. For those who cannot organize private accommodation, the city offers a stay in an evacuation center. The city has a telephone hotline for further questions (0551) 400 50 50 furnished. She is available from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and is expected to be available around the clock on weekends.

One out of six suspects negative

The possible localities are east of the Leine. During the technical preparatory work for the operation, the Lower Saxony explosive ordnance disposal service (KBD) determined that one of the six initial suspects was negative. During the preliminary technical investigation, the team led by demolition expert Thorsten Lüdeke found a bundled accumulation of massive bomb splinters at the suspected spot. They prove that a bomb detonated at the site and that it is therefore not a dud. Accordingly, there are still five suspected dud points.
