Suspected arson in Japanese animation studio charged with murder | NOW

A Japanese prosecutor has formally charged the 42-year-old man suspected in the arson attack at famed animation studio Kyoto Animation in July 2019 with 36 murders. Another 33 people were injured in the fire and the studio was destroyed.

Psychiatric investigation would have shown that the suspect is accountable. In the past, however, the man was treated for an unnamed mental illness.

On July 18, 2019, the man entered the Kyoto Animation studio building, threw flammable liquid around and then set the building on fire.

He was arrested a hundred yards from the building, but had to recover from severe burns for more than 10 months before being arrested for murder. That happened at the end of May this year.

Man believed that the studio was plagiarizing his novel

The unemployed man is said to have said that Kyoto Animations had plagiarized a novel of his. It is the deadliest fire in Japan in nearly 20 years.

Kyoto Animation is one of the most prominent Japanese animation studios and has over 160 employees. The company made the series, among other things The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Clannad in K-On.
