Suspect of trying to kill Trump confirms his intention in letter – 2024-09-24 21:50:04

Ryan Wesley Routh, arrested in Florida for trying to kill former US President Donald Trump, left a letter declaring his intention to assassinate him and asking that if he failed, he finish the job, it emerged on Monday.

A new filing says a witness told investigators Routh had left a box at his home, which “contained ammunition, a metal pipe, miscellaneous building materials, tools, four phones and several letters.”

After learning of the apparent murder attempt, the witness opened the box, the file said.

The letter, addressed to The World, reportedly said: “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, but I failed him. I did my best and gave him all the courage I could muster. Now it is up to you to finish the job; and I will offer 150 thousand to whoever can complete the job.”

On Sept. 15, Routh, 58, walked into an area near Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, with a rifle. A Secret Service agent shot him after spotting a firearm sticking out of the tree line several holes down from Trump’s position.

At his first court appearance on September 16, he was charged with two firearms offenses, but more serious charges could be filed in the case as the investigation progresses.

At the time of his arrest, Routh was so calm it was “unnerving,” Martin County Sheriff William Snyder recalled.

“I honestly thought it looked like someone who had just left a church picnic and was heading home,” he said.

The incident occurred weeks after the former president survived another attempt on his life at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he was wounded in one of his ears by a 20-year-old gunman, who was shot dead on the spot.

Routh is scheduled to appear in court on Monday for bail and will be arraigned on September 30.
