NEW YORK – Authorities arrested a Hispanic man for allegedly threatening people throughout the City of New York to steal money and other property while posing as a New York City Police officerPolice said Wednesday.
Anthony Gonzalez, 57, of the Bronx, was handcuffed the day before on charges of grand and petty theft, criminal impersonation and criminal possession of a weapon and stolen property, authorities said.
Police said the first incident was reported in July 2020, when Anthony González allegedly fought with an employee at Radio City apartments in Midtown. According to authorities, the suspect brandished a firearm and a police shield before threatening the employee to “be investigated by the police.”
In at least two other cases this year, the Uniformed noted that González allegedly posed as an officer to offer help to victims before forcing them to “pay him for services that were never rendered.”
Between a period of almost two weeks in April, the police claimed that the alleged thief took a computer, 15 bottles of cologne, sneakers and clothes from a 60-year-old man. The following month, the Uniform said the suspect took nearly $ 4,000 from a 45-year-old man after posing as a detective.
Detectives investigating the theft pattern say Gonzalez allegedly committed his robberies in Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx.
No further information was released.
