A 42-year-old man who was in prison for his role in a 1994 robbery and murder was arrested Thursday in connection with a fatal shooting last month in southeast Oak Cliff.
Donny Ray Geter faces a murder charge in the death of Joseph Kemp. He was booked into the Dallas County Jail Thursday night.
Officers arrived at the crime scene at 8:20 p.m. on January 5 following reports of a shooting in the 5000 block of Corrigan Court, near East Ledbetter Drive and Bonnie View Road.
At the scene, police found Kemp, 39, wounded by a gunshot. The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.
Witnesses said someone had come out of a home and shot Kemp, then barricaded himself inside the home. But when authorities searched the house, there was no one inside.
Police did not say how they associated Geter with the shooting.
Geter’s bail had not yet been set and it was unclear if he has a lawyer.
In 1995, Geter pleaded guilty to murder for his role in a fatal armed robbery in August 1994. Indravadan Patel, 54, was murdered in his Balch Springs grocery store, court records show.
Police said Geter, 16-year-old Reginald Bernard Johnson and 17-year-old Latoya Nicole Brightmon deactivated the store’s surveillance camera, had Patel empty the cash register at gunpoint, and then fled in his brown Datsun. . Before leaving, Johnson shot Patel with a sawed-off .22 rifle.
Geter, who was 15 years old at the time of the murder, was certified as an adult and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was released from prison in 2016, according to records from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. His robbery accomplices were also imprisoned. Johnson was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison. He is still in prison. And although Brightmon was convicted of armed robbery, the murder charge against her was dropped, court records indicate.
