According to the Public Prosecution Service, the suspect in a car accident that killed a family in March drove on the highway at 250 kilometers per hour. The suspect filmed his speedometer with his cell phone and drove faster and faster. Until one second before the collision in which he hit the back of the family car, he would have accelerated, the OM says.

Two children and both parents from Raamsdonksveer were killed in the accident on the A59 near Sprang-Capelle. The suspect was slightly injured. A test after the accident showed that the man had consumed too much alcohol.

“He has indeed committed criminal offenses,” said his lawyer Broadcasting Brabant. “But my client blacked out the entire ride.”

The Public Prosecution Service does not agree. “Then he could not have made a video either,” said the public prosecutor at the first hearing in the case.

More often in error

It wasn’t the man’s first time filming while driving. “We have found thirteen videos from the past two years on his phone in which he commits traffic violations. He really doesn’t care,” said the public prosecutor.

The Public Prosecution Service suspects the man of manslaughter. There would be conditional intent. This means that the suspect did not cause the accident intentionally, but consciously took the risk by driving under the influence.

He faces a prison sentence of more than 12 years. The case will continue in more than two months. In the meantime, the suspect remains in custody.
