NEW YORK – A man has been charged with multiple counts of allegedly violent sexual assaults of three women who were walking or jogging along the Manhattan waterfront at three different times in an eight-month period from March to November, the newspaper announced Tuesday . Alvin Bragg.
Carl Phanor, 28, was charged with more than 15 charges, including first-degree rape, sexual assault, attempted murder, first-degree strangulation, robbery and more.
“As alleged, Carl Phanor committed three brutal attacks with escalating violence, preying on women who were simply attempting to walk or jog down the boardwalk,” Manhattan District Attorney Bragg said. “These horrific allegations have shocked our city and I want to assure these survivors and all New Yorkers that we will hold you accountable.”
According to court documents and statements made in the court record, the defendant allegedly sexually and violently assaulted three women as they walked or jogged along the Manhattan waterfront in the early morning hours.
The first case occurred on March 27, at around 6:00 am, when Phanor allegedly attacked a 39-year-old woman while jogging on the Hudson River Greenway near Pier 46 in Greenwich Village. He approached the woman on a bicycle, tackled and strangled her before sexually assaulting her, the prosecutor’s office added.
Then, at approximately 5:00am on October 6, 2022, the alleged rapist assaulted a 48-year-old woman as she walked by a East 37th Street yes FDR unit. He reportedly approached from behind her, strangled her and ripped her jeans before making off with her credit card and cell phone.
The last case occurred approximately at 5:45 a.m. on Nov. 3, 2022, when suspect assaulted a 43-year-old woman as she jogged on the Hudson River Greenway near Pier 45, also in Greenwich Village. Phanor allegedly grabbed her from behind her, threw her to the ground, strangled and raped her before fleeing with her cell phone, credit card and other belongings. The suspect was arrested later that morning at the Port Authority when she tried to buy a bus ticket with her credit card.
No details were provided on how long he could spend in jail if convicted.
