NEW YORK – Authorities are still searching for the driver who allegedly drove the wrong way on the Henry Hudson Parkway in Manhattan and caused a crash that left two cousins dead Saturday, New York City police said. York. One of the victims, Kirk Walker, 38, was getting married the day after the disaster, and his girlfriend had to attend the vigil instead of their wedding.
The incident happened on Saturday around 2:20 a.m. near Exit 14 on the Henry Hudson Parkway in Manhattan. It was then that the driver of a pickup truck, who was allegedly driving in the wrong direction, hit the vehicle in which the two victims were riding, near 165th Street the West.
The victims, Walker and his cousin Robert McLaurin, 40, were taken to hospital, but did not survive.
Police said at least three other people in different cars were injured in the crash. The oncoming driver and his passenger jumped out of the truck, which burst into flames when they hit. The passenger, who had to stop because of an ankle injury, was detained by the police while the driver managed to flee the area.
“He was alone coming home and two lives were taken by a careless person,” said Walker’s girlfriend, Shauntea Weaver. They were both going to get married in New Jersey.
It took eight months for Walker to know that Weaver was the man he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. The couple had a car rental business. Family and friends gathered Sunday not for the wedding, but for a vigil for the groom and his cousin.
“Our wedding was supposed to be very complicated too, we put a lot of time, effort and money into this wedding and it was supposed to be now,” she said on Sunday.
Lailah Parrish, Weaver’s daughter from a previous relationship, also knew Walker was the right man for her mother.
“He was always trying to mean the world to me, my mom and my brother,” Parrish said.
On what was supposed to be one of the happiest days of his life, Weaver said he had a message for the driver.
“It’s just a shame. I hope you’re suffering like my family and I are suffering because you took two innocent lives,” he said.
