NEW YORK – A man is facing murder charges for allegedly shooting and killing a NYCHA employee in Queens who was not the target of the shooting, the Queens office announced.
Jerald Bethea, 19, appeared before Queens Criminal Court Judge David Kirschner and was charged with second degree murder and second degree criminal possession of a weapon.
According to the report, the fatality, Darrian Ramdial, a 25-year-old man and Navy veteran, was working in Astoria on April 9, 2020, around 3:00 p.m., when a stray bullet struck him in the torso.
Apparently, the defendant was targeting another person, but unfortunately the bullet ended up in the body of Ramdial who was transported to a nearby hospital but died six days later from his wound.
Authorities say Bethea fled the area and evaded police for months until she was taken into custody Tuesday by the New York City Police Department’s felony warrant squad.
The defendant must return to court on October 23, 2020. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison.
