NEW YORK – Authorities arrested the suspect in connection with three violent attacks that occurred earlier this week in a Manhattan park, police said.
According to the New York City Police report, Elvis Nina Pichardo, 40, from The Bronx, was charged with public lewdness, attempted rape, robbery, assault, among others. The defendant allegedly attacked three women on Monday in different cases and within minutes of each other inside the park. Inwood Park . The suspect in all three incidents threatened to sexually assault the victims, police said.
Pichardo was arrested for the first time on Friday after being linked to a separate crime at the same police headquarters.
The first attack occurred around 11:00 a.m. Monday, when the suspect allegedly struck a 34-year-old woman and threatened to rape her before stealing her phone, headphones and watch.
Shortly after, around 11:45 a.m., the suspect approached a 40-year-old woman and threatened to sexually assault her while demanding that she hand him the cell phone before she managed to escape, according to police.
A few minutes later, the alleged attacker approached a 44-year-old woman and hit her with a tree branch on the head and continued to beat her before stealing her cell phone and backpack with personal items, police said. Paramedics transported the woman to the NYC Health & Hospitals / Harlem from head trauma.
Earlier in the week, Mayor Bill de Blasio called the attacks “outrageous” and “completely unacceptable.” He also said that the New York City Police Department and the New York City Parks Department would deploy more officers to the area of Inwood Hill Park.
On Friday, community members came together to walk together in a large group, in hopes of reclaiming the park. The Parks Department increased horse patrols and the Police Department added officers in scooters. They also put up posters advertising a reward of up to $ 3,500 for information.
