The e-bike Sushi Maki caused a stir in 2019 with its price of 999 euros. The improved version will come onto the market in the spring – and will be correspondingly more expensive.
A good four years after the presentation of their inexpensive urban bike, the two founders Andy Weinzierl and Joko Winterscheidt are simultaneously introducing the sister model California Roll 3.0 with an alternative low-entry frame and mudguards.
The technical upgrade of the Maki 3.0 is accompanied by a price increase to 1399 euros. That’s easily 400 euros more now – but the customers also get a lot more on offer.
Hydraulic instead of mechanical brakes
The most important innovations of the 3.0 version include hydraulic instead of mechanical disc brakes, tires with puncture protection, a more comfortable and ergonomically shaped saddle and handlebar grips.
In addition, drivers can now look forward to integrated lights that draw power from the traction battery. There is an LC display on the handlebars, which serves as a display and control unit for the electric drive. Optional luggage racks and mudguards can be ordered from the spartan Maki.
Up to 75 kilometers range
As before, the Maki and California Roll are characterized by slim frames and a hub motor that is inconspicuously hidden in the rear wheel. The weight is 16 or 17 kilograms. Visually, the e-bikes from Sushi almost look like bicycles with a bio-drive, if it weren’t for the battery mounted on the down tube and reminiscent of a drinking bottle. It allows a range of up to 75 kilometers and can be used as a power bank for smartphones. The Maki 3.0 is available in sizes S, M and L, the California Roll 3.0 is only available in one size.
The new sushi bikes are also no longer manufactured in Asia. Frame and wheels are built in the EU, all wheels are assembled in Portugal.
