SUSE, Oracle and CIQ have decided to join forces around a new association, OpenELA (Open Enterprise Linux Association). Goal: To provide an open process for accessing source code to ensure the development of distributions compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Explanations
We learned this summer the birth of Liberty Linux, a project initiated by SUSE following the closure of the Red Hat Linux Enterprise code. The initiative, launched with an investment of 10 million euros, seems to have inspired the formation of a real alliance with other major players.
Oracle and CIQ have therefore decided to join the German publisher in order to create the Open Enterprise Linux Association. The website has just been put online.
The Entente Cordiale does not hide its game: the creation of OpenELA follows, according to the official statementto “recent changes made by Red Hat to RHEL source code availabilityIn response, the three companies are collaborating to provide the community with source code, tools and systems through OpenELA.

From the end of the year, OpenELA will provide the sources necessary for the existence of downs compatible with RHEL, initially focusing on the EL8, EL9 and ultimately EL7 versions of RHEL. The project is committed to ensuring the continued availability of OpenELA sources for the community indefinitely.
A call that seems to have been heard, in particular by Rocky Linux developersthe distro started by former CentOS maintainer Gregory Kurzter. So we just learned that several Rocky Linux and RESF members have joined the OpenELA community to support this initiative.
The association is moreover entirely open to other partners.
