Susan Sontag: A Complex Relationship with Women and Literature

Susan Sontag, the great American intellectual of the 20th century, had a complicated relationship with women. She loved women without coming out as a lesbian. She was with star photographer Annie Leibovitz from the late 1980s until her death in 2004, but they didn’t officially know each other. Sontag loved women but preferred to write about men. Her best-known portraits are dedicated to characters whose literary greatness she admired: Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, Elias Canetti, WG Sebald. She wanted to be one of them. As she once said of the Jewish philosopher Hannah Arendt, Sontag’s thinking was “male dominated”.
