Susan Sarandon starred in an awkward moment this Monday while accompanying the claim of a group of restaurant workers who are required to receive the minimum wage: She ended up arrested for “disturbing public order”.
The claim was made in New York Capitolspearheaded by the campaign group of activists One Fair Wage that demands a minimum wage for restaurant workers.
The protests took place because recently an increase in the minimum wage was approved (at $17 an hour for the period 2023-2024) but that excludes tipped restaurant workers. In this sector they mainly work single women and mothers of Afro-Latino descent.
“Mothers demand a fair wage,” read the T-shirt worn by the protesters.
In addition to Sarandon, among the protesters was Ana Maria Archila, former lieutenant governor candidate, along with waitresses and their families. In the video that went viral on social networks, you can see the artist walking handcuffedaccompanied by a police officer. Archila was also arrested.
What is the claim that accompanied Susan Sarandon
One Fair Wage seeks to end sub-minimum wages for tipped restaurant workers in New York State. This particular group receives 66% of the general minimum wagewhich ranges from $8.35 to $10.40 per hour.
The intent of the claim on Capitol Hill was to make “a Mother’s Day of action”, aiming for lawmakers to set a real minimum wage for restaurant workers.
“I myself am a mother. I have been a single mother. I have worked in a restaurant for tips. I know how difficult it is and I know how important it is,” Sarandon said in that context.
The actress stood with the protesters carrying signs on the steps of the Capitol and was part of the human chain they made to block a security checkpoint. Faced with that situation, New York State Police arrested eight protesters for disturbance of public order.
Sarandon and Archila were two of those people.. Now the photos of the actress with her hands handcuffed behind her back, but with a relaxed face of her while she was escorted by a police officer, became known.
