Summer 2011 proved to be a busy season for the American mezzo-soprano
On July 22, Susan Graham appeared at the Tanglewood Festival in Massachusetts, where she gave a recital of works by Handel and Gluck.
The Grammy winner appeared in Ravel’s Scheherazade during a four-day tour with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra conducted by Sir Colin Davis. Stops were at the Bolzano Italian Festival (August 18th), the Salzburg Festival (August 20th), a concert at the Dresden Opera (August 22nd) and an appearance at the Royal Albert Hall during the BBC Proms festival. The new opera season will again meet Susan Graham with the image of Iphigenia from the opera “Iphigenia in Taurida” by Gluck. With this role, the mezzo-soprano appeared on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera at the beginning of the year in a stage partnership with Placido Domingo (see photo gallery), who reincarnated the role of Orestes.
Now, however, Graham will conquer the Canadian public. Toronto Opera will present Iphigenia in Tauris, a co-production of Chicago Opera, San Francisco Opera and Covent Garden. On the Canadian stage, she will be joined by the American bass-baritone Mark Steven Doss and the Canadians Russell Brown-baritone and Joseph Kaiser-tenor, and the Spanish conductor Pablo Eras-Casado will stand at the helm. The premiere performance will take place on September 22. At the end of 2011 Susan Graham will appear on the stage of the San Francisco Opera in the opera “Xerxes” by Georg Friedrich Handel.
