The statement said that “They took shelter from Hamas rocket fire in the interior staircase of their hotel until early Sunday morning, when they were able to safely leave for New York.”
Other Big Apple officials were also in Israel when the surprise attack began. The New York Police Department confirmed that some of its personnel are outside Israel and out of danger. It is not known how many people there were.
In a statement on Saturday, the mayor Eric Adams noted that the attack “is nothing more than a cowardly action.”
Speaking about additional security, the mayor stated: “I am also communicating directly with Police Commissioner Caban and Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism Weiner about the situation.”
“While there is no credible threat to New York City at this time, our administration is in contact with Jewish leaders in all five boroughsand we have ordered the NYPD to deploy additional resources to Jewish communities and places of worship from across the city to ensure our communities have the resources they need to ensure everyone feels comfortable and safe.”

For her part, the governor of New York, Kathy Hochul confirmed that she had conversations with the acting consul general of Israel in New York and expressed that he is working to ensure that New Yorkers in Israel “return home safely.”
“I have also spoken with the Acting Consul General of Israel in New York to offer our support, and We are working with the US Embassy in Israel to discuss ways to bring New Yorkers home safely if they wish,” Hochul said.
“I am committed to doing everything I can to support this community at this critical time.”
