Surviving in the crisis: It is getting better, but it is far from being good

The “Press am Sonntag” has accompanied six entrepreneurs since the outbreak of Covid-19 through the crisis, representing thousands in Austria who fear for their existence. The entrepreneurs are slowly seeing light at the end of the tunnel – but just because things are getting better is not going to be good.

Whenever you are in this economic crisis Stefan Pierer on the phone, the majority owner and CEO of Pierer Mobility AG (KTM, Husqvarna) was always in good spirits. “I’m not despondent,” he said in mid-March, when he had to close the Mattighofen plant in Upper Austria and send the 3,600 short-time employees. It was going to be tough, he said at the time, but “life will go on again”.
