With the start of the Christmas holidays this Friday, December 22, activity will intensify in the emergency services even though they are already experiencing tense situations. We take stock with Professor Louis Soulat, head of the Ille-et-Vilaine Samu and the emergency department at Rennes University Hospital.
The Christmas holidays start this Friday evening. If for some it is synonymous with rest, in Breton hospitals, the situation will become tense with an increase in activity. Professor Louis Soulat, head of the Ille-et-Vilaine Samu and emergency services at Rennes University Hospital, takes stock of the local situation.
“It’s a bit of an encore repetita. Always the same problemsWe have difficulties finalizing schedules during this tense period. And then there are always big problems of lack of downstream beds for patients while we are in a triple epidemic phase, flu, Covid and bronchiolitis for infants” explains Professor Louis Soulat.
One of the recurring problems in emergencies is therefore the lack of staff. “The summer was tough and we knew it would be tough from September to December, with a lot of starts and a lot of stops” explains the head of emergencies at Rennes University Hospital. “The schedules remain complicated but we had the good news at the beginning of November of being able to reactivate the Redon emergencies at night. So, for the holidays, there remain two sensitive points: Fougères and Vitré.”
Professor Louis Soulat reminds us that in order not to unnecessarily overcrowd the emergency services, you should not go there directly but first call 15. “It’s very useful for us because this medical regulation, before coming to the emergency room, makes it possible to best guide patients, particularly vital emergencies. We must actually avoid going to emergency rooms which could potentially be a regulated activity.”.
