Surviving Amputation: The Harrowing Story of Kristin Fox

Jakarta

A mother of two in Ohio, Kristin Fox (42) tells her story of having an amputee after suffering from the flu. Doctors were forced to amputate both hands and feet to save his life. What really happened?

It all started with the symptoms of a sore throat he experienced. When he went to the hospital, the doctor said he had the flu. The doctor then gave him medicine and allowed him to go home.

However, not long after returning from the hospital, his body condition worsened. Fox admitted he couldn’t even get up from his couch.

The doctor then examined him again and diagnosed Fox as suffering from pneumonia caused by bacteria that causes organ failure. Not only that, the doctor said that he also experienced septic shock. This condition is an infection that can cause organ failure and a decrease in blood pressure.

Seeing Fox’s condition, the doctor then deliberately put him into a coma or in medical terms it is called a medically-induced coma. This was done by doctors to save Fox’s vital organs.

Not only that, in March 2020 doctors told the family that they had to amputate Fox’s leg below the knee. Two weeks later doctors also amputated both of his arms to keep his organs alive.

“Sometimes I complain, but I remind myself that the children could mourn my death. They are now 12 and 10 years old, I can’t imagine them living without me,” recalled Fox, quoted by the Daily Mail, Wednesday ( 11/15/2023).

Fox was finally released from the hospital a few weeks after surgery. In the next stage he underwent physical therapy at the Rehabilitation Institute of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).

During the rehabilitation process, Fox’s lungs collapsed again. He had to return to therapy for six weeks to restore his body.

In October 2020, he finally had prosthetics for his arms and legs. However, currently Fox prefers not to use arm prosthetics. According to him, not using a prosthetic arm makes his life easier.

“It was a huge journey. It was like a trial and error of what worked and what didn’t,” he said.

“I don’t use arm prosthetics at all. I learned to live without them, it’s easier. I can even drive without arm prosthetics,” he concluded.
