When asked about the reason why the bread ends up in the bin, many answer that they do not know how to use the leftover bread. Then French toast or cheese sandwiches might be a good idea. Photo: Ole Berg-Rusten / NTB

A survey shows that the proportion of Norwegians who never throw away bread has risen by almost 10 percentage points in the past year.
The survey carried out by YouGov shows that almost 50 percent say they manage to get rid of the bread before it is thrown away, writes nations.
– It is a gratifying development that we hope will continue, says general manager Torunn Nordbø in the Information Office for Bread and Grain.
Last year, 40 percent answered that they do not throw away bread. The number has now increased to 48 percent this year.
According to Nordbø, the figures match what the Norwegian Institute for Sustainability Research and Matvett found in 2021.
– Among other things, they found that Norwegians threw away 2 kilograms less bread in 2020 than in 2016.
When asked about the reason why the bread ends up in the bin, many answer that they do not know how to use the leftover bread. It is the youngest, the age group 16 to 34, who give this answer to the greatest extent. Among the population over the age of 65, eight out of ten answer that they never throw away bread.
