In a survey of 20 countries around the world, the percentage of people supporting nuclear power generation was 1.5 times higher than the percentage of people opposing it. The number of countries with more support for nuclear power than opposition was found to be 17 out of 20.

According to a survey conducted by Radiant Energy Group, an international energy consulting company, in the report ‘Status of Public Awareness of Energy in Major Countries’ published by the Korea Energy Information Culture Foundation on the 10th, 46% of respondents in 20 countries, including the United States and China, supported the use of nuclear power generation. It was revealed that the number of opposing responses was 1.5 times higher than the opposing response of 28%. In October and November of last year, Radiant Energy Group signed a contract with 20 countries around the world, including Korea, 16 countries that operate commercial nuclear power plants, including the United States, China, France, Russia, and Japan, and 4 countries that do not have commercial nuclear power plants in operation, including Italy, Norway, the Philippines, and Australia. A nuclear power plant awareness survey was conducted targeting 20,112 people aged 18 or older.

Of the 20 countries surveyed, 17, excluding Spain, Brazil, and Japan, showed more support for the use of nuclear energy than opposition. In particular, support for nuclear power plants was more than three times higher than opposition in countries such as China (61%), Russia (60%), the United Arab Emirates (UAE, 60%), and India (57%), while support for nuclear power plants was more than three times higher than opposition in Sweden (56%) and the Philippines (52%). , France (50%) were also selected as countries where more than half of the respondents responded in support. In Korea, support was 45% and opposition was 28%, which was similar to the average.

When asked about future nuclear power plant policies, more than two-thirds of the respondents said they would continue to maintain nuclear power plants (68%), significantly exceeding those who said they would phase them out (19%). 27% of respondents said, ‘We should not only maintain nuclear power plants, but also encourage new nuclear power plants by providing subsidies,’ 19% said, ‘I agree with maintaining and building new nuclear power plants, but we should not provide subsidies,’ and ‘It is good to continue using nuclear power plants, but it is okay to build new nuclear power plants.’ The opinion that ‘is opposed’ was 13%.

In particular, the response that nuclear power plants should continue to be used was high in countries that were pursuing nuclear phase-out policies, such as Sweden (74%) and Belgium (69%). Sweden decided to phase out nuclear power plants in 1980 and closed 6 out of 12 reactors, but in August of last year, it abolished the nuclear phase-out policy for the first time in 43 years and decided to build 10 new nuclear power plants by 2045. Belgium also declared nuclear phase-out in 2003 and planned to stop operating all nuclear power plants by 2025, but last year it put its nuclear phase-out policy on hold and extended the deadline for continued operation of the second reactor.

In Korea, 82% of respondents said they would continue to use nuclear power plants, the second largest after China (86%), and even narrowing it down to those in favor of new construction, the number reached 50%, followed by Russia (61%) and China/UAE (56%). , followed by India (54%) and the Philippines (53%), followed by Sweden and South Africa.

Meanwhile, in an item asking about preference for clean energy, nuclear power received 25%, ranking second after solar power (33%). Among the five major countries, nuclear power surpassed solar power in France and Russia, but nuclear power lagged behind solar power in Japan, the United States, and China.
