The survey showed significant shifts in views, reflecting a change in the landscape of transportation preferences, with 64% of participants expressing concerns about the environmental impact of vehicles operating with internal combustion engines, which was clearly reflected in their strong interest in moving to electric vehicles in the coming years.
26% of people who do not currently own an electric vehicle revealed their interest in purchasing one within the next 12 months, while 50% of participants said that they might consider moving to electric vehicles during the same period of time, which demonstrates the trend towards adopting electric vehicles.
A large percentage of 63% of respondents expressed their intention to adopt electric vehicles as primary means of transportation within a period ranging from 6 months to two years, an indication that the trend towards sustainable transportation is greatly accelerating.
The strong interest in electric vehicles represents a measure of strong customer confidence in the growth of charging infrastructure in the UAE, as 73% of the population expects charging stations to spread every few kilometers in the next five years.
Customers also expect electric vehicles to spread widely in the future, as a third of respondents expect that between 30-50% of the UAE population will drive electric vehicles or hybrid cars by 2030.
Exceed expectations
Katib Belkhouja, Director of Customer Focus at Al-Futtaim Automotive Group, said: “The results of the survey exceeded all our expectations, especially since 63% of participants explicitly expressed their choice of electric vehicles as their primary means of transportation. The main barriers to EV adoption are safety concerns (49%), service costs (44%), limited charging infrastructure (41%), long battery life (41%), and resale value (32%).
68% of participants believe that electric vehicles are more expensive than conventional fuel vehicles, which may prevent customers from adopting electric vehicles.
Charging electric vehicles is a major source of concern, especially since 44% of the population cannot install a charging station at home.
Belkhoja added: “There is no doubt that there are some obstacles that we must overcome, but the results have strengthened our confidence in the electric transportation strategies that we seek to achieve.
