Seven years ago, on June 23, 2016, a narrow majority of British voters decided to leave the European Union. However, Brexit has not gone according to plan, and a majority of Britons now want to return to the EU.

According to a survey conducted by the Tony Blair Institute and published on Friday, 59 percent of people in the UK are in favor of re-entry into the EU. This marks a significant shift in public opinion since the Brexit referendum. The survey also revealed that only one in ten Britons now sees Brexit as a success, with 52 percent believing that leaving the EU has hurt the UK economy.

The survey commissioned by the London think tank “UK in a Changing Europe” also found that a majority of Brits, regardless of their opinion on Brexit, have lost confidence in British politicians. Three-quarters of respondents said they no longer trust politicians in the country.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, London and Brussels have been working to improve their relationship. However, the conservative British government is still facing pressure from hardliners who want to make greater use of the opportunities gained through Brexit.

The Scottish regional government has emphasized that Brexit has severely damaged Scotland and believes that the only way to reverse this damage is for an independent Scotland to rejoin the EU. A majority of Scots voted against Brexit in 2016.

Despite the dissatisfaction with Brexit, there is unlikely to be a public debate on the issue. A majority of 54 percent of respondents in a survey conducted by “UK in a Changing Europe” stated that they do not want to hear anything more about Brexit.

It remains to be seen how the UK government will respond to the growing desire among Britons to return to the EU. However, with the majority of Brexit voters now dissatisfied with the outcome, it is clear that Brexit has not delivered on its promises.
